My Backyard in 1854
Contributed by: Lorraine Fuller
There was once a thriving town on the property where my family lives. My next door neighbor has a bench that was built around a tree and the foundation that are all that remain of the school. Another neighbor gifted her with photos of the school building and the children who attended and a map of the area. There was a corn field where my house and backyard are, but I would have been right between the school and the post office. The old well for the school is capped and lies on our property. Across the street from my house is one of the many historical markers in the neighborhood.
All that is left of the town is a church with a graveyard several miles north of our home and a building that was once the crossroads store a mile south. It’s a great neighborhood! I love imagining what life was like when the town was here.
Your community has amazing historical roots! I can only imagine what it feels like to look outside and see glimpses of the past! — Story Guru
